McKINNEY Texas (UPI)- Investigators want to determine whether a cut on the leg of suspect Candy Montgomery may have been caused by an ax used in the slaying of a Wylie school teacher the Dallas Times Herald reported Saturday.
The cut was found during a search at the Collin County jail according to a source quoted by the newspaper.
The 30-year-old mother of two was examined at a hospital late Thursday officials said but they refused to say why or what was found.
Montgomery is charged with killing Betty Gore, 30, with a three-foot ax on June 13 at the Gore home in nearby Wylie.
Mrs. Gore's body was found in the utility room after phone calls from her husband failed to get an answer.
Gore a native of Norwich was buried in the small Kansas community near Wichita.
The cut found on Montgomery's leg may be related to one of three state motions heard by State District Judge Tom Ryan, Friday. Montgomery was released on $100,000 bond after the session.
One prosecution motion seeks a blood sample from the suspect to determine whether her blood type is different from Gore's.
Investigators theorize that the killer may have been cut during the slaying. Blood samples taken from the scene might reveal a blood type other than Gore's.
Prosecutors also are seeking a sample of Montgomery's hair to compare with hair found in the shower at the Gore home where the killer apparently washed before leaving.
Another hearing was scheduled Wednesday on the first two motions. The third motion caused Ryan to close the session to the news media saying it concerned "the admissibility of certain evidence" in the case. If it is determined admissible he said it will become public knowledge. There was speculation it dealt with the cut.
Attorneys for the suspect proclaimed their client's innocence to reporters. Lawyer Don Crowder said he is making his own investigation and says he thinks Gore's killer is a man.
Crowder also said he will take Montgomery before television cameras next week to "show that she's not some ogre or a troll living under the bridge."
A warrant was issued Thursday for Montgomery's arrest after police said they linked her to the crime through a bloody fingerprint found at the Gore house.
The print may be Montgomery's her lawyer said "but I don't believe it was a bloody fingerprint."
The two women were friends and Montgomery was babysitting with one of the Gore children the day of the slaying.
