WARSAW, Poland, Nov. 2, 1989 (UPI) -- East German leader Egon Krenz arrived Thursday for talks with Polish leaders in a visit a Solidarity newspaper said signaled implicit ''approval of Soviet perestroika and Polish reforms.''

PRAGUE, Czechoslovakia, Nov. 3, 1989 (UPI) - More than 5,000 East Germans massed at the West German Embassy were told they were free to leave immediately for the West in an order some diplomats interpreted to apply to all East Germans.

POMEZI, Czechoslovakia, Nov. 5, 1989 (UPI) - East Germans taking advantage of a temporary ease on travel restrictions poured across the Czech-West German border Sunday by train, bus and car and the East Berlin mayor said a proposal for permanent travel laws would be published Monday.

BERLIN, Nov. 7, 1989 (UPI) - West German border police said Tuesday it appeared East German guards had relaxed controls at highway border checkpoints leading West, resigned to the mass exodus of refugees through Czechoslovakia.

BONN, West Germany, Nov. 8, 1989 (UPI) -- West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl said Wednesday the exodus of East Germans has shown the world the postwar division of Germany is unnatural and Germans will not accept it.Kohl, in a state-of-the-nation speech to parliament, also repeated his often-made offer of comprehensive economic aid to East Germany if it makes basic reforms such as ending Communist Party domination of the government.

BERLIN, Nov. 8, 1989 (UPI) -- Elderly hard-line members of the Communist Party Politburo, East Germany's top policy-making body, resigned Wednesday to make way for men considered more open to reforms that leader Egon Krenz hopes will stem an exodus of East Germans.

BERLIN, Nov. 9, 1989 (UPI) -- The East German government Thursday dropped all restrictions on travel to the West, and thousands of citizens of the communist state flocked to the Berlin Wall, the symbol of the Iron Curtain, to taste their new freedom.

Built at the height of the Cold War, the Berlin Wall has stood for nearly three decades as a grim symbol of division and repression in Eastern Europe and as a flash point in U.S.-Soviet relations.

EAST BERLIN, Nov. 10, 1989 (UPI) -- East German border guards tore away parts of the hated Berlin Wall Friday as thousands of their countrymen swarmed on a tide of joyous tears through the symbol of a divided Europe, testing their shaky government's open border decree and further crumbling the Iron Curtain.

BERLIN, Nov. 12, 1989 (UPI) -- The mayors of East and West Berlin officially opened a new border checkpoint Sunday in what was once the heart of the city, and troops with automatic rifles were later rushed to the site as hundreds of West Berliners surged forward shouting, ''Let us in, let us in.''
