Unhappy Britons elect 'Iron Lady'

LONDON, May 4, 1979 (UPI) - Margaret Thatcher was elected Europe's first woman prime minister today and defeated Prime Minister James Callaghan sought an audience with Queen Elizabeth II to present his resignation.

LONDON, April 28, 1986 (UPI) - Rejecting charges she was ''President Reagan's poodle,'' Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said Britain might support more U.S. military actions against ''tyrants'' in the Middle East to deter terrorism.

LONDON, June 6, 1992 (UPI) -- Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher led a list of 21 former members of parliament given life peerages in her successor John Major's Dissolution Honors List Saturday.
