PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii -- A fire broke out on the flight deck of the nuclear carrier USS Enterprise today and a military source reported casualties "may be heavy."
This was substantiated by a request from the Navy for donations of blood. The Navy spokesman asked all civilians to report to Queen's Medical Center and all military personnel to Tripler General Hospital, both in Honolulu, for their blood donations.
The fire broke out on the 1,123-foot, 86,000-ton vessel, the largest warship in the world, while it was 75 miles southwest of Honolulu. Its home port is Alameda. It has a crew of 4,600.
