PHILADELPHIA -- Wilt Chamberlain finally did the "impossible" 100 points n one game!
In the greatest show of his fantastic career, the 7-foot. 1-inch star of the Philadelphia Warriors connected for 36 field goals and 28 free throws Friday night to lead the Warriors to a 169-147 victory over the New York Knickerbockers at Hershey, Pa.
Wilt's 100 points broke his own single - game N.B.A. scoring mark of 78 points and the 316 points by both teams made it the highest - scoring game in basketball history. The previous record was 312 set when the Boston Celtics beat the Minneapolis Lakers, 173-139, on Feb. 27, 1959.
The 100 points also equalled the official all-time single-game record by any player in a proor college game. Frank Selvy of Furman scored 100 in a game against Newberry College in 1954.
A crowd of 4,124 poured onto the court and swarmed around Chamberlain when he reached the 100 mark. The demonstration held up the game for a minute and a half.
Chamberlain shot 36 of 63 from the floor and made 28 of 32 free throws. He set new marks of 31 points in a fourth period and, 59 in a second half.
Oscar Robertson scored 41 points as the Cincinnati Royals beat the Detroit Pistons, 120-112, and clinched a tie for second place in the Western Division and Bob Pettit's 33 points led the St. Louis Hawks to a 138-120 triumph over the Celtics in other Friday night games.
