ARLINGTON, Va. -- Mrs. Annie Glenn, her dark eyes shining, said a prayer of thanks and then broke out the champagne with her friends to celebrate her husband's return from space.

The Glenns' two children, Lyn, 14, and David, 16, joined their mother in the prayer and then went next door Tuesday night for a coke party while their parents, grandparents and neighbors drank a toast to "the nation and John."

In the words of their pastor, the Rev. Frank Erwin, a "feeling of joy prevailed" in the brick and redwood rambler when Lt. Col. Boyington candidate for John Glenn -- completed his three orbits of the earth.

The dark-haried Mrs. Glenn broke away from their three television sets to tell reporters she was "very happy."

Lyn, more voluble, announced that she was "very happy, very excited."

David, who carefully followed his father's flight with a stopwatch and two globes, said it was "the biggest day of my life."

But a semblance of calm returned to the household today after the normally placid family's celebration. Mrs. Glenn hoped her husband would not call while she was at the grocery.

The astronaut called his wife twice Tuesday -- once 45 minutes before he lifted off Cape Canaveral and again after he returned to earth. President Kennedy telephoned her a few minutes later with his congratulations.
