WASHINGTON -- President Kennedy today named Dr. Janet Travell of New York City as his personal White House physician -- the first woman ever to be given such an assignment.
The 59-year-old specialist in orthopedic medicine also is the first civilian to be named White House physician since the administration of Warren G. Harding in 1921.

White House Press Secretary Pierre Salinger said the White House is studying whether special legislation will be needed to authorize putting Dr. Travell on the federal payroll as a civilian.
The President has credited Dr. Travell with having saved his life after she began treating him in 1955 following a back operation. He regards her as a medical "genius."
