PARIS -- Paris celebrated its 2,000th "birthday" anniversary Sunday night with parades, fireworks, dancing in the streets and plenty of the untranslatable "ooh, la, la."

Fireworks illuminated such familiar landmarks as the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, the Opera and the Place de la Concorde.

Through the streets gay celebrants, led by students, laughed, shouted and snake-danced.

A more solemn note was struck in the many cathedrals of the "City of Light" where special services and concerts of sacred music were held.
