Fight on Suez Canal control
CAIRO, Sept. 3, 1956 (UP) --Government newspapers warned today that the West is committing suicide in the Middle East because of its demand that the Suez Canal be put under international control.The warning came as President Gamal Abdel Nasser told the nation it faces the threat of war with Britain and France. He said he was willing to accept any solution to the Suez crisis except internationalization.
U.S. joins Britain and France in pact to take over Suez
LONDON, Wednesday, Sept. 12 1956 (UP) -- The U.S., Britain and France are joining in a pact to take over operation of the Suez Canal, Prime Minister Anthony Eden revealed today.In a speech to a special session of the House of Commons, Eden said the "users association" was being formed to insure that the canal is kept running.

UNITED NATIONS, N.Y., Oct. 10, 1956 (UP)--Egypt pressed today for a negotiated solution to the Suez dispute "consistent with Egyptian sovereignty" over the canal. But there were no signs that Egypt or Britain and France were ready to compromise.United Nation's Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold was using his own brand of quiet diplomacy in an effort to find a solution through secret talks. India's V. K. Krishna Menon, meanwhile, worked behind the scenes for a yet unannounced compromise.

Syria crisis may spur Egypt withdrawal
LONDON, Dec.1, 1956 (UPI)-France and Britain were reported agreed today on plans for early withdrawal of troops from Egypt to speed the Suez Canal reopening and restore Western allied unity before a full Syrian crisis breaks.Soviet Russia kept the Middle East simmering by repeating its charges that the United States is carrying out a provocative campaign against Syria "in preparation of an armed attack." Syria also appealed to the United Nations to curb "aggressive anti-Syrian intentions of Britain, France, Turkey and Israel."
British counts toll of Egyptian invasion
LONDON, Dec. 21, 1956 (UP) - An official British report said Friday that a "reasonable estimate" listed 2,750 Egyptian casualties as a result of Anglo-French operations at Port Said. It listed Egyptian dead at 650.The casualty report, released as a government white paper, was prepared by Sir Edwin Herbert, president of the British Law Society.
UN salvage fleet begins task of clearing Suez canal
CAIRO, Dec. 28, 1956 (UP) -- The United Nations salvage fleet was reported at work clearing the Suez Canal today. Cairo newspapers said the move meant the Middle East crisis was nearing an end.U.S. Lieut. Gen. Raymond A. Wheeler, head of the salvage team, ordered his salvage vessels to start work at the southern end of the blocked waterway.
Congress leaders back Eisenhower's pressure on Israel
WASHINGTON, Feb. 21, 1957 (UP) - Congressional leaders of both parties today generally supported President Eisenhower's call to "bring pressure" on Israel to withdraw its troops from Egypt.The congressmen indicated they appreciated the complexity of the crisis and said the President made a good case for the U.S. position.

JERUSALEM, March 21, 1957 (UP) -- Israel will refuse to budge from its demand for guarantees against Egyptian attack before withdrawing its troops from Egypt, informed sources said today.Premier David Ben-Gurion and his cabinet met in emergency session to consider the threat of United Nations action against Israel. WASHINGTON, Feb. 25, 1957 (UP) - President Eisenhower warned the people of the Middle East today to stand clear of the "menace of international communism" lest it "smash all their hard-won accomplishments overnight."Eisenhower reiterated in a special shortwave broadcast beamed overseas that his Mideast resolution, now pending in Congress, is designed "to help bring stability" to the troubled areas.
Israel orders troops withdrawn from Gaza Strip, Gulf of Aqaba
JERUSALEM, March 4, 1957 (UP) - Israel today ordered its troops to make a swift withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and Gulf of Aqaba area.The order was given by Premier David Ben-Gurion to Maj. Gen. Moshe Dayan, Israeli army chief of staff. It came after Dayan had met with Maj. Gen. E.L.M. Burns, commander of the United Nations Emergency Force.
