PARIS, May 15, 1958 (UP) - Gen. Charles De Gaulle announced dramatically today that "I hold myself ready to take over the powers of the Republic."Thus, the 67-year-old World War II hero stepped back into the political picture in a crisis that has brought France to the brink of civil war.

Charles de Gaulle made it known today that he has no intention of returning to power by force.He indicated his position as Premier Pierre Pflimlin demanded sweeping powers from the National Assembly to meet the twin threats of a Gaullist revolution and a Communist uprising. He asked for declaration of a three-month state of emergency.

ALGIERS, June 4, 1958 (UPI) - Premier Charles de Gaulle arrived here today in the full uniform of a French army general to impose his supreme authority on Algeria's rebellious military and civilian leaders.The wartime resistance hero flew here from Paris for a tumultuous welcome from the groups whose uprising brought him to power. But it was a showdown visit in which he was using his full powers and prestige to squash the last traces of rebellion.

He renewed his pledge to the country's Moslems that they would have absolute equality with Frenchmen.He also appealed to the Moslem rebels to lay down their arms now that France had "opened the door to reconciliation."

ORAN, Algeria, June 6, 1958 (UPI) - Gen. Charles de Gaulle today called on the insurgent Public Safety Committees of Algieria to submit to the legal government in Paris. He said the work of the committees is done.De Gaulle said flatly he would run Algieria from Paris, with Gen. Raoul Salan as his "delegate general" in this North African land.

PARIS, Sept. 29, 1958 (UPI) - Premier Charles de Gaulle, backed by a landslide vote setting up a new republic, was expected to scrap France's system of selecting National Assembly deputies.Between now and voting in November, informed sources said today, de Gaulle will scrap the proportional representation system that gave much influence to minor parties and replace it with the pluralities system used in the U.S. and Britain.

PARIS, Dec. 1, 1958 (UPI) - Premier Charles de Gaulle ruled today as France's undisputed strong man, swept to a pinnacle of power and prestige by a tidal wave of votes in runoff elections yesterday for Parliament.This was the third straight massive confidence vote for de Gaulle in two months. He is expected to get an even bigger edge on Dec. 21, when 100,000 "grand electors" meet to name a new president with greater powers than modern France has known. De Gaulle is the overwhelming favorite.

ALGIERS, Jan. 9, 1961 (UPI) - Algerians favored President Charles de Gaulle's peace proposals 1,747,529 to 782,056, final figures in the voting showed today.Supporters of the 70-year-old French president, who staked his job on the outcome of the three-day referendum in Algeria and France on Algerian self-determination, swept aside a Moslem boycott and bloodshed to give him the vote of confidence he had demanded.
