Chamberlain says Great Britain and Germany at war

LONDON, Sept. 3, 1939 (INS) - Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain proclaimed to the British empire and the world at large today that Great Britain and Germany are at war, a conflict that may lead to a general outbreak.

After failing to persuade Chancellor Hitler to cease hostilities in Poland and withdraw troops the reich claims already have taken control of Danzig and bottled up the Polish corridor, Great Britain's premier in a history-making radio broadcast today said that no reply had been received to the latest Anglo-French ultimatum to Germany.

"Consequently," Chamberlain said in a solemn voice, "this country and Germany are at war."

The state of war actually began between Germany and Great Britain at 11 a.m. (6 a.m. EDT) according to an official announcement by the British Broadcasting Company.
