LONDON, Aug. 22, 1939 (UP) -- Europe today reeled under the shock of announced German-Russian negotiations for a non-aggression pact.
As Nazi Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop began an aerial journey to Moscow to draw up a Soviet bilateral peace pact, there were these repercussions in Europe's capitals:
London-A statement issued at the prime minister's office tonight said parliament had been summoned to meet Thursday and to approve emergency power for defense. The statement said that the navy, army, air force, and air raids precaution corps and the civil defense corps were being called up as a precaution.
Warsaw-Government sources announced determination to defend Poland's borders regardless of totalitarian pacts and democratic decisions.
Berlin-Nazis hailed the Russians pact as ending British-French-Russian mutual assistance negotiations. And foresaw an immediate decisive victory in the Polish dispute. Thousands of reservists were being mobilized and reports said a Danzig ultimatum is imminent.
Paris-As before the Czecho-Slovakian crises, France today summoned anti-aircraft specialists and thousands of them were assembling. The government began immediate consultations with French allies.
Danzig-Nazi leader Albert Forster predicted at a German jurist convention that the end of the free city was in sight and the lawyers would be the last to meet there before it became German territory.
Moscow-British and French ambassadors conferred with Premier and Foreign Minister Viacheslav Molotoff. Subject of the conference was not announced, but it was believed the ambassadors demanded an explanation of the German negotiations.
Rome-Fascist newspapers claimed that Italy had full knowledge of theGerman-Russian negotiations and that the pact had Mussolini's full approval.
Smaller European powers pledged neutrality as seven of the nations met in Brussels to design means to protect their countries and pool resources for mutual aid in event of war. The Netherlands government canceled all regular leaves of troops assigned to the frontier.
