Seville rebels order big push

By MICHAEL McEWEN

GIBRALTAR, July 21, 1936 (UP) - Spanish rebels today broadcast an appeal for all Fascist, Monarchists and other right wing adherents to mobilize at 4 P.M. (noon New York time) under arms for a supreme test of strength against the government.

The appeal flashed out over Spain from the broadcasting station at Seville, chief rebel stronghold in the south.

Loyal government airplanes have bombed the rebels at Algeciras in the south, and in the southeast rebels claimed the surrender of Granada.

A fight was expected hourly at Algeciras, where civilians were understood already to have begun battling rebel regulars. Loyal destroyers were expected to bombard the city.

The area here was more quiet this morning. Work people from La Linea were permitted to enter Gibraltar, hands over their heads as they approached the heavy barbed wire obstructions erected during the night. They underwent scrutiny by the British frontier guards.

Five thousand refugees crowd Gibraltar. So congested are the streets that it is almost impossible to walk.

The frontier was closed this afternoon to refugees from Spain. Military police and a fire brigade with hoses strongly enforced the closure. Behind their barrier were thousands of Spaniards, clamoring for admittance. Many fainted and were taken to hospitals.

A wireless message from the British destroyer Shamrock, off Malaga, indicated that the city is definitely in the government's hands.

The Spanish oil tanker Ophir put in here today after having been heavily shelled by rebels in Morocco while trying to refuse loyal navy ships.

The British agreed to a request of the United States Consul that the Shamrock take care of Americans in Malaga, along with British subjects.
