LONDON -- According to a dispatch from Rome received here today, Cardinal Della Chiesa, assistant papal secretary of state, was elected by the sacred college to succeed Pope Pius X.
The new pope is an Italian. He was archbishop of Bologne and he was made a cardinal at the consistory held last may.
ROME -- Cardinal Giacomo Della Chiesa was elected pope on the ninth ballot. He chose for his official name "Benedictus XIV."
Following his election the new pope received the adoration of the fifty-seven cardinals present in the conclave. His coronation will come later.
By those who know him well, the belief is expressed that the new pope will carry on the policies begun by his predecessor.
Benedictus XIV was born at Malo, Italy, July 26, 1853. He was ordained in 1878 and later became bishop of Sabina. His name was not among those mentioned as the probable successor of Pius X.
Since the sacred college met last Monday thousands of people have surrounded the Vatican watching the smoke of the burning ballots arise.
