Apple iPhone X features edge-to-edge glass, OLED display, Face ID and more

Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Apple revealed its newest smartphone, the iPhone X, on Tuesday morning.

At the unveiling, held at the new Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, Calif., CEO Tim Cook introduced the phone before Philip W. Schiller, Apple's senior vice president, detailed its major features, including edge-to-edge glass, OLED display, Face ID and more.

The new iPhone's front and back glass will be framed by "surgical-grade" stainless steel around the edges. The front will feature the first OLED display on an Apple phone.

Apple believes OLED technology has progressed enough to offer the iPhone a thinner, lighter and brighter display. What Apple is calling its Super Retina display will also boast True Tone display technology, offering the iPhone X improved color accuracy.

The upgraded display -- measuring 5.8 inches diagonally and featuring a resolution of 2436 by 1125 pixels -- won't come cheaply. The new iPhone will be Apple's most expensive yet, retailing for $999 with 64GB of storage. The 256GB version will cost $1,149.

The new iPhone's camera will also be upgraded. Two 12-megapixel rear cameras will come standard on the iPhone X. Both lenses will have optical stabilization capabilities, and both will be paired with larger, faster sensors. A quad-LED True Tone flash will offer more consistent illumination in low-light settings.

As usual, the new iPhone isn't all about additions. Apple has decided once again to upgrade by subtraction. Last time, it was the headphone jack -- to the dismay of many -- that got the axe. This time, the home screen button says bye bye. Users will now swipe up from he bottom to return to the home screen.

Apple's fingerprint recognition is also no more. The new iPhone will feature Face ID, facial recognition technology, which Apple says will improve security. An infrared sensor on the front of the phone will scan and recognize the phone owner's face in 3D. All an iPhone X user has to do to unlock it is look at the screen.

Tuesday's event also featured the introduction of the iPhone 8 and the slightly larger iPhone 8 Plus. Both phones will feature edge-to-edge glass and a faster processing chip.

The tech company also unveiled their newest Apple TV, now with 4K streaming capabilities, as well as their latest Apple Watch, which was upgraded with cellular capabilities.

Apple will begin taking preorders for the new iPhone on Oct. 27. The first iPhone X orders will ship on Nov. 3.
