WASHINGTON, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- President Bush signed legislation Tuesday authorizing the creation of a museum honoring African Americans.
The National Museum of African-American History and Culture Act will be part of the Smithsonian Institution, and will include exhibits on slavery, reconstruction, the Harlem renaissance, the civil rights movement, and key periods in African-American history.
Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, issued a statement saying the legislation "represents the story of trial, tribulation and triumph in African American history."
The bill signed by Bush declared, "Since its founding, the United States has grown into a symbol of democracy and freedom around the world, and the legacy of African Americans is rooted in the very fabric of the democracy and freedom of the United States."
