Abortion clinics still face violence

BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Sept. 29 (UPI) -- A study by two criminal justice professors indicates legislation has not ended crime and violence against abortion clinics in the United States.

William Pridemore of Indiana University and Joshua Freilich of City University of New York found that U.S. abortion clinics are still subject to violence and vandalism and their employees often face harassment.

A survey of 361 abortion clinics in 48 states revealed that 7 percent of the facilities experienced major violence or major vandalism while 9 percent reported minor violence and 27 percent experienced minor vandalism.

Pridemore says 44 percent of the clinics reported being subject to harassment.

The study by Pridemore and Freilich is due to be published in an upcoming issue of the journal Law and Human Behavior. It is reported to be part of a larger ongoing project looking at the formation, evolution, culture and various illegal acts of far-right groups and related social movements.
