NEW DELHI, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- India and the United States have resumed co-operation on the nuclear safety issues, a U.S. official said in Delhi Thursday.
"We have agreed to renew the relationship with India on nuclear safety cooperation and have resumed dialogue with our Indian counterparts," Richard A. Meserve, chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, told reporters in the Indian capital.
Meserve is on a six-day trip to India and has held talks with top officials of India's Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, Atomic Energy Commission. He also visited the Tarapore reactor facilities, according to the Press Trust of India.
The two sides have included risk-informed regulation and license renewal in the ambit of their bilateral ties on nuclear safety issues. The two sides had been so far cooperating on fire safety, symptom-based emergency procedures and plant design modifications, the PTI said.
The nuclear cooperation between India and the United States had snapped after Washington imposed sanctions against India for conducting nuclear tests in 1998. But Meserve's India visit is part of an overall structural dialogue on nuclear issues between the two nations.
"The purpose of my visit here was to meet with a number of officials responsible for nuclear safety matters, and to start the process for the resumption of the safety dialogue," Meserve said in Mumbai.
