ST. LOUIS CARDINALS ANKIEL TO SWITCH FROM PITCHER TO OUTFIELDER
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Rick Ankiel says he is giving up on the mound and will now try to make the club as an outfielder, in Jupiter, FL on March 9, 2005. As a rookie in 2000, Ankiel went 11-7 with a 3.50 ERA and 194 strikouts in 175 innings as the Cardinals won the National League Central. However, Ankiel suffered control problems in the postseason. Ankiel finally underwent reconstructive elbow surgery in 2003 and made it back on a Major League mound in 2004. Ankiel, 25, decided after control problems in spring training it was time to try something else. (UPI Photo/St. Louis Cardinals)
