BOXING GLOVES HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION JOE LOUIS ARRIVE AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN HISTORY

The boxing gloves of heavyweight champion Joe Louis have been donated to the National Museum of American History in Washington on January 31, 2007. The gloves were used in Louis' first fight against Germany's Max Schmeling in 1936, which he lost. Louis won the rematch in 1938 at Yankee Stadium. Due to the turbulent time in history, the two matches transcended boxing and became worldwide events with racial and national overtones. (UPI Photo/Yuri Gripas)
