Former St. Louis Cardinals slugger Mark McGwire admits steroid use while playing baseball
Former St. Louis Cardinals slugger Mark McGwire, shown in this August 5, 2000 file photo has admitted using steroids while chasing the home run record of 1998, he says in a statement to media outlets on January 11, 2010. McGwire, who says he is truly sorry, says he took the drug to combat various injuries. McGwires reputation has been tarnished since March 17, 2005, when he refused to answer questions at a Congressional hearing, instead saying "I'm not here to talk about the past". McGwire has been hired by the Cardinals as the team's hitting coach for the 2010 season. UPI/Bill Greenblatt/FILES
