Writing under his real name, as well as Jack Martin, he has a successful novel, and has seen publication in a number of print magazines, as well as had work on both BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio Wales. As Gary Dobbs, he has appeared as a character actor in Doctor Who, Torchwood, Moonmonkeys, Lark Rise to Candleford, Casino Royale (2006) and The Big I-am.

As Jack Martin he is responsible for Robert Hale Ltd.'s fastest-selling "Black Horse Westerns" novel, The Tarnished Star. In 2010, he was awarded the Small Press Award for Excellence in Blogging for his site The Tainted Archive (published as "Jack Martin/Gary Dobbs"). A second Western novel, Arkansas Smith was published March 2010 by Hale, with another on the way in 2011, The Ballad of Delta Rose. In 2010, as Gary M. Dobbs, he will also see publication of a crime novel, A Policeman's Lot. Gary was also the author of the 1988 text based adventure game for the ZX Spectrum range, Operation Thunderbowel from Sacred Scroll Software. In 2010 it was announced that Gary working with author, Terry Harknett is to bring the first Edge novel, The Loner back into print as an eBook, with plans to bring the other books in the long running series into digital print. 2011 will see the publication of a third western published with Robert Hale LTD, The Ballad of Delta Rose which Gary (Jack) calls his most hard-boiled western yet.

It was announced in 2011 that director Neil Jones and his company Burn Hand Films would bring The Tarnished Star to screen under the title, LawMaster. The film is expected to begin shooting during mid - late 2012.
