BAQUBA, Iraq, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- The use of unmanned aerial surveillance vehicles is not likely to go away. Nor is the desire for "eyes in the sky" anything new. The French used a balloon for surveillance in 1794 to beat the Austrians in the Battle of Fleurus, and both sides in the U.S. Civil War made use of observation balloons. In both World Wars, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, small aircraft were used for surveillance and reconnaissance.
