ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Pakistan's army chief, in an open letter to the Mehsud tribes, asked for their support in the military's current push against militants in South Waziristan.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari's government could do a great deal with the windfall $7.5 billion to fix the country's crippled economy, much of whose meager resources are being swallowed to finance the fight against the escalating militant violence.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- To bring Taliban and al-Qaida to heel in the tribal areas, Pakistan told the United States it needs helicopters -- and lots of them. They know that in the Vietnam War the United States lost 3,305 Huey helicopters, including 2,202 pilots killed in action. All the United States could come up with were 10 Russian-made helos; four of them were useless. No spare parts. U.S. services now fly some 2,000 Blackhawks. So do a score of other nations, including Gulf Arabs. But Pakistanis are told they’re not qualified. Why not?

WASHINGTON, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Half the American people are now against the war in Afghanistan, which President Obama now describes as a war of necessity. He may have lost the election last November if he had come out against both the Iraq and Afghan wars. His opponent would have described him as a pacifist afraid to stand up to America’s enemies.

WASHINGTON, July 28 (UPI) -- Britain calls for a change in Afghan strategy, urging the Afghan government to engage in diplomacy with “moderate” Taliban. Trouble is CENTCOM commander Gen. David Petraeus doesn’t believe in moderate Taliban. But Pakistani strategy is now based on some kind of accommodation with Taliban. This is also Britain’s new position.

MANIPAL, India, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- The head of the snake that is the Taliban is the Pakistani army. This is where attention needs to be focused, now that Pakistani Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani has failed in his gambit of using the Mumbai terror attacks to divert international attention away from his reluctance to engage the Taliban.
