We profiled Whole Foods supermarkets this week, soon after the company released its survey touting that 70% of Americans will still buy organic, when possible. Our researchers asked respondents at 30 retail locations about which items customers shop at Whole Foods for, how many customers shop at Whole Foods exclusively or supplement their shopping with other markets too, and which items are most popular? We learned that 77% of respondents felt that their customers came to Whole Foods for natural, chemical-free foods. Another 13% felt that their shoppers were concerned with buying from local growers and sustainability. And 10% thought that their shoppers came because they like the brand and the stigma that comes from shopping there. Meanwhile, 43% of those polled say that 10-20% of their customer base shop at Whole Foods exclusively (for all grocery purchases.) Another 33% say over 25% shop at Whole Foods only and 23% say 20-25% shop this way. And 50% say their customers mostly buy organic produce. Another 27% say customers shop mostly for free range and organic meats and 17% say customers buy bulk foods like grains, cereals etc.
According to store employees, 84% of customers shop at Whole Foods because they want to eat natural foods without added chemicals. Tickermine’s survey of thirty-one Whole Foods stores around the country determined that organic produce remains the most commonly purchased food at eighteen (58%) stores. Bulk goods and prepared foods were the most commonly purchased at six (19%) and five (16%) stores, respectively. As in previous months, weekends remain their busiest time at twenty-eight (90%) stores. Evenings were reported as busiest at fifteen (48%) Whole Foods stores, whereas ten (32%) reported that both night and day times were equally as busy. Thirteen stores (42%) believed that at least 25% of their customers buy all of their groceries at Whole Foods, twelve stores (39%) reported that their customers purchase 5-20% of their groceries at Whole Foods.
