AIG is preparing to list its Asian life insurance unit in an IPO expected to raise up to $20 billion

According to David Barboza of the New York Times, American International Group (NYSE: AIG)(FREE stock trend analysis), the troubled insurance giant, plans to list its Asian Life Insurance unit on the Honk Kong stock exchange, which would help it raise as much as $20 billion.

The planned listing would thus help A.I.G repay some of its debts to the US Government. The listing will also make it one of the largest public sector offerings ever. The Asian Life Insurance unit already has more than 20 million policy-holders in various countries across Asia.

A.I.G., in order to protect its credit rating, agreed to give a stake in the Asian unit to the Federal Reserve to get a $16 billion loan waive-off. A.I.G was in favor of a public offering so it decided to scrap the idea of auctioning its assets earlier this year. Deutsche Bank (NYSE: DB)(FREE stock trend analysis) and Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS)(FREE stock trend analysis) have been selected to prepare the public offering.
