American Home Mortgage Investment operates as a real estate investment trust (REIT) for federal income tax purposes, and its corporate structure includes both qualified REIT subsidiaries and taxable REIT subsidiaries. Co. is engaged in the business of investing in mortgage-backed securities and mortgage loans resulting from the securitization of residential mortgage loans that its subsidiaries originate and service. In addition, Co. invests in securitized mortgage loans originated by others. Co. provides a variety of home mortgage products through a network of retail loan production offices as well as through its wholesale and Internet mortgage lending operations.
