The Ugly Decade
Hickey and Walters (Bespoke) submit:
While the official start to the next decade isn't until 1/1/2011, the media typically starts and ends its decade coverage when the "9" in the year rolls back to "0". Over the next few weeks, investors will surely get their fair share of decade coverage, in both looks back at the 2000s and looks forward to the 2010s. Since 1900, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has declined in price (not total returns) in just two decades -- the 1930s and the 2000s. The Dow is currently down 9.2% since the end of 1999. In the 1930s the index fell 39.5%. The best decade was the 1990s when the index rose 317.6%. Complete Story »

Casella Waste Systems Inc. plans earnings filing Wednesday; CWST, WCAA, PESI, WM
| Investors watch earnings filings with particular interest, as changes in a company’s ratios can be a good indication whether a company is on the right track, or headed the wrong way. Casella Waste Systems Inc. (CWST) is scheduled to release its earnings results Wednesday. The company currently has an earnings per share ratio (EPS trailing twelve months) of -2.84 and investors are hoping to see that number change. Let’s take a look at the performance of the stock since its previous earnings release. {loadposition link_newslink1} | | | | {loadposition livevideopromo} | | | | | | {loadposition homeaccordion2} | | | {loadposition contentad} | | | | | In the past three months, the stock has posted a 54.48% gain in terms of stock price. Over the same period, the Waste Management industry group has returned a combined 9.20% gain. So the eyes of investors turn to this new round of earnings. Now, good earnings don’t always lead to higher stock prices, but keeping up on earnings is still a vital part of your fundamental stock analysis. Also note that companies often change earnings dates, so you should double-check them often. When looking at earnings, it’s very helpful to see how stocks compare to others in its industry group. And even though two stocks may not be direct competitors, many analysts and institutional investors still compare them and evaluate them relative to other stocks in their group. CWST is in the Waste Management industry group where it competes for investor dollars with companies like WCA Waste Corporation (WCAA), which released its earnings on 10/28 and last reported a 15.98% gain in quarter-over-quarter EPS. Another industry peer, Perma-Fix Environmental Services Inc. (PESI) released its earnings on 11/06 and last reported a 33.92% gain in QOQ EPS. Waste Management, Inc. (WM) is the stock with the biggest market cap in the Waste Management industry at $16.08B. FDIC Fund In The Negative
In its quarterly report on the banks, issued on Tuesday, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) said that the deposit insurance fund used to protect customer accounts dropped by $18.6 billion during the third quarter of 2009 to a deficit of $8.2 billion, while banks earned only $2.8 billion as loan defaults continued to hurt bank balance sheets. The agency said that the decline in the insurance fund was due primarily to an additional $21.7 billion set aside by the FDIC during the quarter for additional bank failures. [More...]

Market Wrap-Up for Nov.23 (PRU, DE, SLB, WM, CVX, SJM, more)
The market didn’t give buyers too much time to think about their decision this morning, as we went straight up in little time, and closed up nicely, but not quite at the intraday highs.
Volume was on the light side as we will likely see more of the same as we go through this holiday-shortened trading [...]
