PARIS JOHN PAUL II SQUARE INAUGURATION
Some 200 Paris Council members and AIDS activists protest on the square in front of Notre Dame cathedral in central Paris September 3, 2006, ahead of a ceremony to rename the esplanade after the late pope John Paul II. The protesters carried banners reading "Square of the AIDS dead" as well as crucifixes decorated with condoms, claiming it is unacceptable to have a John Paul II Square when the church has yet to acknowledge its mistakes over AIDS.
