ACTIVISTS MARCH TO PROTEST DEPORTATION OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT ELVIRA ARELLANO IN LOS ANGELES
Immigration activists march in downtown Los Angeles on August 25, 2007 to protest the deportation of illegal immigrant Elvira Arellano whose U.S.-born son stayed behind. Arellano, a native of the Mexican state of Michoacan, became a lighting rod for the debate over illegal immigration when she holed up in a Chicago church seeking sanctuary from federal agents who were trying to kick her out of the country. Arellano opted to leave her 8-year-old son Saul - a U.S. citizen by birth - in the Chicago area where he is expected to attend public school in the fall. Elvira Arellano and Saul are pictured in photo poster at left. (UPI Photo/Jim Ruymen)
