GRENOBLE, France, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Former Formula One champion Michael Schumacher's skiing injury may have been made worse by a camera attached to his helmet, French investigators said.

Schumacher suffered cerebral lesions and brain contusions Dec. 30 during a skiing injury in which he fell and hit his head on a rock at the Meribel resort in France.

The 45-year-old German race car driver has been in a medically induced coma at University Hospital in Grenoble, France, ever since and most recent reports show he's suffering from pneumonia.

Now French investigators believe a camera attached to his helmet at the time of the accident may have made his helmet weaker and more susceptible breaking.

"The helmet completely broke, it was in at least two parts. Ensa [the investigation body] received one piece of helmet to check the material and all was ok. But why did it explode on impact?" a source close to the investigation said. "Here the camera comes into question. The laboratory is testing to see if the camera weakened the structure."
