PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- A 30 year-old employee of the U.S. Consulate in Peshawar was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen on Monday as he returned home from the consulate.
The Pakistani employee, Faisal Saeed, was standing outside his house when the men opened fire. A friend, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to The Washington Post, said, "They did not take his belongings and his mobile."
Saeed worked as a computer programmer for the consulate and was responsible for updating its Facebook page.
The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad released a statement condemning the attack.
"Local authorities are investigating a tragic incident that has affected a Pakistani national U.S. consulate Peshawar employee. ... We strongly condemn this brutal and senseless death and express our heartfelt condolences to the family.”
The U.S. Consulate in Peshawar has been the target of previous attacks. A suicide bomber targeted a consulate convoy in September 2012, wounding two American employees. A 2010 terrorist attack against the consulate killed two Pakistani consulate employees and six others.
It is unclear whether Saeed was targeted for his consulate affiliation.
