SOCHI, Russia, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Olympic gold medalist Sage Kotsenburg's parents didn't want to be the last to find out if their son placed in Saturday's snowboarding slopestyle competition, so they stayed up late.

At 4 a.m. Saturday, the Kotsenburgs told USA Today there was no way they'd get back to sleep after their 20-year-old son beat the odds to win gold.

"Can you believe it?" Steve Kotsenburg said. "We are so beside ourselves right now."

"There's no sleep here tonight," he said from his Park City, Utah home.

Steve, his wife Carol Ann and their daughter watched a livestream of the first Olympic competition and said they planned to watch the telecast on a "big screen" at a place they rented in Salt Lake City.

"(Sage is) a very good spokesman for snowboarding, whether he is on that podium or not," Steve said. "He loves the sport.. … If you're not having fun with this sport, it's not worth it to you. .. He's a really good representation of wanting to keep it fun in this sport."

Kotsenburg wasn't favored to win the slopestyle competition, having come in 20th at last year's world championships. He won with a 93.50 score.
