How to watch the Sochi Olympics live

NBC, which broadcasts the Olympics in the U.S., is streaming the games online and through its tablet and smartphone apps.

SOCHI, Russia, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- At long last, the Sochi Olympics are here, kicking off with opening ceremonies Friday night in Russia.

For those watching from the United States, the time-delayed television broadcast on NBC will air the main events, including Friday's opening ceremony, in prime time.

But for the impatient, NBC is streaming every event online, both on its website, NBCOlympics.com, and on its NBC Sports Live Extra apps for iOS and Android. The catch: These services are only available to cable subscribers.

And the network also declined to broadcast the opening ceremonies.

“We want to put context to it, with the full pageantry it deserves,” said Mark Lazarus, chairman of NBC Sports Group.
