SACRAMENTO, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Granite Bay High School, concerned their production of Laramie Project would be protested by the Westboro Baptist Church, instead found messages of love.
When students and faculty at the Sacramento, Calif., high school decided to produce the play, about the murder of Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyo., they feared that the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church would be there to protest the production.
The Love is Love project, a movement focused on promoting equal rights for gay people, showed up with signs of encouragement and love. One woman in the groups said, "I want to show that God and Jesus Christ is about love. There is no place for hate."
Only one person was present with anti-gay signs despite online messages indicating there would be a much larger presence. One person from the Love is Love movement said, "Westboro Baptist Church is a diminishing organization. People don't believe in that kind of hatred anymore on a wide scale."
Opening night of the play went on without any incident.
