NEW YORK, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Late-night host transfers always seem fraught with drama -- 2010's Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien debacle, for example -- so it's nice to see a more jovial handover take place.
Jimmy Fallon, who will move to the Tonight Show starting Feb. 17, invited his successor to Tuesday's taping for a ceremonial passing of the Late Night pickle.
Fallon explained that the giant green pickle came from David Letterman's era, which ended in 1993 when he moved to CBS. Letterman's writers passed it on to Conan O'Brien.
"He had it, and then he gave it to me," Fallon said of O'Brien. "And then I've been stuck with it for five years -- I mean I've been so blessed to have this thing for five years -- and so now, I would like to present it to you."
"Hold back the emotion," Fallon joked.
