CAIRO, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- A senior official in Egypt's Ministry of Interior was killed Tuesday in Cairo.
Presidential spokesman Ehab Badaway said that Gen. Mohamed El-Saeed was shot in the Giza area of Cairo and was likely on his way to work when he was killed.
Saeed was the head of the Ministry of Interior's technical department and a senior aide to Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim. The Ministry of Interior has led a crackdown on Islamists in recent months that has resulted in clashes with Islamists and their supporters and attacks by militants. Saeed may have been targeted for his leadership at the ministry.
An assassination attempt against the interior minister in September failed.
