Candy Crush Saga creators trademark the word candy

This could mean that smaller developers would have to resort to changing the name of their apps, if a trademark claim is filed against them.

Videogame maker King, creator of Candy Crush Saga, said it has trademarked the word candy to protect the game from intellectual property infringement, after applying for a trademark claim nearly a year ago.

In response to the development, games on the Apple App Store containing the word are supposedly receiving emails from Apple asking them to remove their apps. Apple seems to be following its own policy, through which the company automatically sends out notices asking the two parties to connect if a claim is filed.

This could come as a blow to smaller game developers who may not have the resources to fight trademark claims. Benny Hsu, who is the creator of " All Candy Casino Slots -- Jewels Craze Connect: Big Blast Mania Land," said that he doesn't have the money to fight such a claim and will change the game's name if it comes to that.

According to King, Candy Crush Saga was the most downloaded game on iPhones and iPads in 2013.
