Jan. 16 (UPI) -- France's de facto first lady Valerie Trierweiler has been "resting" in the hospital since Closer magazine published a scandalous report about President François Hollande's late-night rendez-vous with actress Julie Gayet.

Trierweiler reportedly contacted a French radio station on Thursday to comment publicly for the first time since the scandal broke and to fend off rumors that Hollande didn't want to visit her in the hospital.

RTL radio claimed to have spoken to Trierweiler by phone.

"She doesn't want to people to think he is neglecting her at such a painful time," an RTL correspondent said. "It was the doctors who had forbidden the head of state to visit her, it is a widespread practice in case of psychological distress. The patient is temporarily confined, kept at distance from their entourage to get better."

Trierweiler, a journalist, denied rumors that she suffered from a nervous breakdown, blaming her hospitalization on "extreme fatigue." She said that Hollande had sent her flowers and chocolates.

Hollande has refused to answer questions about whether Trierweiler is still France's first lady, though he said he would "clarify" the situation before next month's visit with President Barack Obama.
