A bomb exploded inside a crowded mosque Thursday evening in northwestern Pakistan, killing at least eight and wounding 67 people.

Approximately 800 worshipers were in attendance for evening prayers at the Islamic seminary, located in the outskirts of Peshawar, when the bomb exploded. The chief of the provincial bomb squad, Shaqat Malik, told local media that the bomb was concealed in a canister of butter within the main hall and was detonated by timer.

The number of dead and injured prompted city hospitals to declare a state of emergency and to issue a call for blood donations.
