Jan. 15 (UPI) -- A 44-year-old British man with mental health problems has been sentenced to 16 months in jail for a misguided attempt to see Queen Elizabeth last October.

David Belmar jumped over a vehicle barrier near the staff entrance to Buckingham Palace with a knife in his pocket. He reportedly told police at the time that he "wanted to see the queen" because he was "not happy with his benefits."

A judge at London's Southwark Crown Court sentenced Belmar on Wednesday for trespassing and possession of a bladed article. The prosecution argued that Belmar, who was arrested in 1989 for throwing fireworks onto the palace grounds, was "a danger not just to himself but to others."
