Jan. 11 (UPI) -- U.S. box offices could be looking at a record January opening weekend with "Lone Survivor," which grossed $14.4 million on its opening night Friday.
The war flick starring Mark Wahlberg was expanded to 2,875 theaters nationwide Friday after a limited release at Christmas so it could qualify for the 2013 awards season, Forbes reported.
The current record holder for a January weekend debut is "Cloverfield," which earned $40 million in 2008.
The Peter Berg-directed drama focuses on the real-life botched Navy Seal raid in 2005 in Afghanistan. It cost $48 million to make and is expected to gross more than $100 million.
