Cuba's ailing former leader stepped out in Havana Wednesday, appearing in public for the first time in months.

Fidel Castro, 87, attended the opening of an art gallery featuring Cuban artist Alexis Leyva, known as Kcho, with his wife Dalia Soto de Valle.

Castro seems frail in the photos, walking with a cane and leaning on an aide.

The former leader, who stepped down from nearly half a century of power in 2008, was last seen in public in April, when he attended the inauguration of a Havana School.
