A man who escaped from the Blackburn Correction Complex in Kentucky on Sunday night turned himself in on Monday afternoon after the chill of the polar vortex gave him a case of frostbite.
Robert Vick was free for about 20 hours before the cold caused him to seek shelter back behind bars.
The 42-year-old is serving a six-year sentence for burglary and a five-year sentence for criminal possession of a forged instrument.
Vick was taken into custody at the Sunset Motel after he asked to be turned into police.
"He said ‘can you call the law on me?’ and I kind of looked at him I thought he was crazy or something,” said motel manager Maurice King. "He was shivering he was really cold. He was ready to go back."
Victoria Fugate was staying at the motel on Sunday night and Vick asked her for help.
"He was hungry the dude knocked on our door, we gave him a ham and cheese sandwich, we gave him some hot chocolate," Fugate said. "The next thing you know today (Monday) they are here they are arresting him, he's frostbit. Our barn's out back, I guess he slept there.”
After being taken to the University of Kentucky Hospital for treatment, Vick was brought back to the correctional facility. He may face additional charges because of the escape.
