Jan. 7 (UPI) -- After trailing for much of the night, Heisman-winning quarterback Jameis Winston was able to lead Florida State on an 80-yard, game-winning touchdown drive in the final moments of the last BCS title game to cap off the biggest comeback in the history of the contest and defeat Auburn 34-31.

The final six minutes of the BCS national championship game saw the lead change hands numerous times and included a 100-yard kickoff return by FSU's Kermit Whitfield as well as a 37-yard touchdown run by Tre Mason for Auburn.

However, the most important play of the game was undoubtedly Winston’s two-yard touchdown pass to Kelvin Benjamin with 13 seconds remaining to secure the game and the championship for the Seminoles.

"I mean, that's a storybook moment right there," Winston said following the game. "I was ready. I wanted to be in that situation because that's what great quarterbacks do. That's what the Tom Bradys, Peyton Mannings, Drew Brees', that's what they do. That last drive, that's a great way to cap off our season. That's the way we wanted to cap off our season."

The Seminoles found themselves down to the Tigers 21-3 early on and it certainly looked as if their undefeated season (14-0) would be blemished by a loss. Thanks to Winston, their perfect record stayed intact.

"This is the best football game he's played, because he struggled for three quarters and that's a great team we played on the other side and great players understand great moments," Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said. "That's what great players do."

The BCS system will be replaced by playoffs next year.
