Dec. 30 (UPI) -- If you missed out on a certain comedian's appearance in The Desolation of Smaug, don't despair. One eagle-eyed Reddit user went to see The Hobbit sequel and caught Stephen Colbert's promised cameo in GIF form.

Last year, the Tolkien devotee spent a week of The Colbert Report on Hobbit-themed episodes. Colbert also mentioned that director Peter Jackson had invited him to the set and The Hollywood Reporter spoke to a source who confirmed the satirist's planned appearance in the film.

Colbert told Letterman earlier this month that skeptical fans could "check IMDB."

"“I don’t want to tell anybody where I am, but I’m in it," he said.
