New Year's strawberry lowered in Harrisburg, Pa., each year busted on trial run

Trial run of strawberry drop in Harrisburg, Pa., for New Year's celebration goes awry.

Dec. 28 (UPI) -- A rehearsal Friday for Harrisburg, Pa.,'s annual ceremonial New Year's Eve strawberry drop went awry when the lit strawberry fell three stories and broke.

Each year, the lit strawberry is slowly lowered down the front of the Harrisburg Hilton as residents count down the final seconds to the New Year.

Practicing for the big night, a clip holding the strawberry in place broke, causing it to fall and crack upon hitting the ground, The Patriot News of Pennsylvania reported.

The Hilton said it plans to build a new strawberry in time for Wednesday's countdown.
