Allen McKeown, the British comedy producer who was married to singer and actress Tracey Ullman, died at his Los Angeles home on Tuesday after battling prostate cancer.

McKeown, born in Ealing, England, launched his career by working as a hairdresser for the likes of the Beatles, Elizabeth Taylor and Michael Caine. He began working as a producer, then formed his own production company, Witzend, making films such as Porridge and To Russia With Elton.

While working with Fox and Paramount, he met and married Ullman in 1983, and together they created the Emmy-winning Tracey Takes On... for HBO. They later collaborated on State of the Union for Showtime.

McKeown was among the first independent television producers in the U.K. and produced television, films and stage productions on both sides of the Atlantic.

He is survived by his wife, Ullman, and their two children, Mabel and Johnny.
