Dec. 25 (UPI) -- Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, a time-traveling cult comedy starring Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, was such a hit back in 1989 that a sequel, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, debuted in 1991. Though Reeves and Winter are now 50 and 48 respectively, Reeves told the Today show that there's still a story in the works for slackers Bill and Ted at 50.

"I'm open to the idea of that," Reeves said of a third film. "I think it's pretty surreal, playing 'Bill & Ted' at 50. But we have a good story in that. You can see the life and joy in those characters, and I think the world can always use some life and joy."

"There's a story; there's a script," he added. "We're trying to get the dough together to make this crazy story."

The news comes as no surprise to longtime Bill & Ted fans. Reeves discussed the script with MTV back in September, but said "there's darkness out there that's keeping it from happening."

"It's a long story," he said. "There's lots of subterfuge and conspiracy theories. There's a whole thing... I might have to do one of those independent press, conspiracy, other-name kind of [statements] explaining why it hasn't happened yet, because it's pretty dark out there."
