TB test results within expected range at southern California high school

Only 126 students tested positive for possible exposure to tuberculosis, which is well within the expected range of positive cases, and health officials are saying that they do not fear an outbreak of the illness.

Tuberculosis tests conducted Friday at Indio High School in southern California were within expected limits with only 126 students testing positive for possible exposure to tuberculosis.

Riverside County health officials tested 1,332 faculty and students on Friday and asked them to return Monday to check the results. Officials insisted that the results of the 126 people does not mean that they have TB. They have been asked to get a chest X-ray and are being treated with antibiotics. All but 31 students who were treated Friday did not return to get their skin tests read.

“Given this population, we would expect a positive test result of no more than 10 to 15 percent,” said Dr. Cameron Kaiser. “These numbers are very reassuring for the community as a whole. The health department will follow up with those who tested positive for exposure.”

The tests were conducted after 45 students tested positive for possible exposure last week.
